elements and principles of design

Preceptor: Lachlan Harris

Price: $15

“Elements and Principles of Design” is a foundational, yet intellectually rigorous course that explores the structural and aesthetic building blocks of all visual and spatial compositions. This course is designed to equip you with a robust understanding of both the core elements (the ingredients of design) and the principles (the rules of visual composition), as they apply across various domains including graphic design, interior design, fashion, industrial design, architecture, digital media, fine arts, and communication design.

This course will bridge visual literacy with critical design thinking, helping you to not only recognize the anatomy of effective design but also apply it practically and strategically. The course goes beyond surface-level descriptions and delves deeply into technical, psychological, cultural, historical, and functional perspectives, ensuring you grasp the multi-dimensional importance of each design component and compositional strategy.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and analyze the core elements of design and how they function individually and collectively.

  • Apply principles of design to create aesthetically balanced and purposeful compositions.

  • Evaluate design works critically using appropriate terminology and conceptual frameworks.

  • Demonstrate mastery in the application of design elements and principles across analog and digital formats.

  • Understand how cultural, social, and emotional factors influence visual design choices.

  • Create original design compositions with technical precision and conceptual clarity.

Scope and Coverage

The course is divided into 10 modules, covering both elements and principles as individual components and integrated systems. Topics include:

  1. Introduction to Design Theory & Visual Language

  2. Line, Shape, and Form

  3. Color Theory and Application

  4. Texture, Space, and Value

  5. Typography and Letterform Design

  6. Balance and Symmetry in Composition

  7. Contrast, Emphasis, and Hierarchy

  8. Rhythm, Repetition, and Pattern

  9. Unity, Harmony, and Variety

  10. Design Systems and Visual Problem-Solving

Each module will include:

  • Historical contexts

  • Cross-disciplinary application

  • Technical drawing or design tasks

  • Studio critique examples

  • Real-world industry use cases (advertising, architecture, UX/UI, branding, etc.)

Core Design Elements Covered:

  • Line: Direction, contour, movement, psychological effects

  • Shape: Geometric, organic, abstract forms

  • Form: Volume, depth, 3D structure

  • Color: Hues, saturation, schemes, emotion, branding

  • Texture: Tactile vs. visual texture, material implication

  • Space: Positive/negative space, spatial organization

  • Value: Light and shadow, depth creation, drama

Key Design Principles Covered:

  • Balance: Symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial

  • Contrast: Size, color, texture, shape

  • Emphasis: Focal points, dominance, accents

  • Movement: Guiding the eye, flow

  • Rhythm: Repetition, progression, visual tempo

  • Unity & Harmony: Coherence, visual agreement

  • Proportion & Scale: Size relationships

  • Variety: Visual interest and dynamic composition

  • Hierarchy: Ordering visual elements by importance

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, you will:

  • Demonstrate critical thinking in analyzing visual work.

  • Show fluency in the visual language of design and its components.

  • Produce visually compelling and conceptually strong compositions.

  • Translate theoretical design knowledge into professional practices.

  • Evaluate work based on objective criteria like balance, unity, and function.

  • Construct visual narratives that evoke intended psychological and emotional responses.

Practical Tools and Methods Included:

  • Visual analysis exercises

  • Design sketchbooks and mood boards

  • Software tutorials (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Figma, Canva)

  • Critique circles and peer reviews

  • Case studies from branding, architecture, web design, and advertising

  • Portfolio development sessions

Industries and Fields of Application:

  • UI/UX and Web Design

  • Architecture and Urban Planning

  • Product and Industrial Design

  • Fine Art and Illustration

  • Fashion and Textile Design

  • Motion Graphics and Animation

  • Advertising and Brand Development

Philosophical and Cultural Relevance

The course also examines how design elements and principles reflect cultural aesthetics, socio-political contexts, and psychological theories of perception. You will explore:

  • Bauhaus and minimalist theories

  • African and Asian spatial symbolism

  • Feminist and decolonial approaches to composition

  • Psychological theories of perception (Gestalt, Color Psychology)

Course Assessment Format:

  • Module Quizzes (Multiple Choice – A to D format)

  • Studio Tasks and Assignments

  • Peer Reviews and Critique Workshops

  • Portfolio Submission

  • Final Design Project + Presentation

  • 50-question Final Exam

Certification:

Learners who complete all modules, assignments, quizzes, and the final project will receive a Certificate of Completion, indicating mastery of the elements and principles of design and readiness for practical or academic progression.
