Music theory is the foundational language of music, an intricate system that explains how musical elements interact, communicate, and form the basis of all musical expression. This course, "Introduction to Music Theory," is crafted to provide a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the building blocks of music. It explores not only the what and how of music, but also the why bridging the gap between performance and comprehension.

This course is tailored for musicians, vocalists, music producers, composers, choir members, educators, students, and all enthusiasts who seek to deepen their appreciation and command of music through theoretical knowledge


Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand and apply the basic elements of music theory: pitch, rhythm, melody, harmony, and form.

  • Read and interpret standard musical notation (staff, clefs, notes, rests, etc.).

  • Construct and analyze major and minor scales, chords, intervals, and key signatures.

  • Comprehend rhythmic structures, time signatures, and rhythmic patterns.

  • Utilize the Circle of Fifths for transposition and understanding harmonic relationships.

  • Analyze and create chord progressions and identify common cadences.

  • Develop basic aural skills through interval and chord recognition.

  • Begin composing short musical pieces using theoretical frameworks.

This course combines conceptual explanations, visual notation examples, listening activities, interactive quizzes, and optional composition exercises to support diverse learning styles. Each module builds on the previous, enabling a progressive and immersive learning experience.

Module 1: What is Music Theory?

  • How theory connects to performance, composition, and listening

Module 2: The Musical Alphabet and Notes

  • 12-tone system, enharmonics, sharps & flats

  • Staff, clefs (treble, bass, alto), and ledger lines

  • Octaves, pitch naming, and accidentals

Module 3: Rhythm, Meter, and Time Signatures

  • Note values (whole, half, quarter, etc.)

  • Rests and rhythmic patterns

  • Simple, compound, and complex time signatures

Module 4: Scales – Major and Minor

  • Construction and structure of scales

  • The pattern of whole and half steps

  • Natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales

Module 5: Intervals and Ear Training Basics

  • Types of intervals (major, minor, perfect, augmented, diminished)

  • Interval recognition (visual and aural)

  • Harmonic and melodic intervals

Module 6: Chords and Harmony

  • Triads, seventh chords, inversions

  • Dissonance vs. consonance

  • Harmonizing melodies

Module 7: Key Signatures and the Circle of Fifths

  • Identifying key signatures

  • Major and minor key relationships

  • Circle of Fifths and modulation basics

Module 8: Chord Progressions and Cadences

  • Common progressions (I–IV–V–I, ii–V–I, etc.)

  • Types of cadences (authentic, plagal, deceptive, half)

  • Functional harmony and voice leading

Module 9: Basic Notation and Reading Sheet Music

  • Sight-reading basics

  • Dynamics, articulations, and expressive markings

  • Interpreting rhythm and pitch in notation

Module 10: Introduction to Composition and Songwriting

  • Structure of a musical piece (motif, phrase, period)

  • Melody writing techniques

  • Combining rhythm, harmony, and melody creatively

  • Final Exam: 50 Comprehensive Multiple Choice Questions

  • Optional Assignments: Notation exercises, basic composition tasks

  • Ear Training Exercises: Practice identifying intervals, chords, and rhythms by ear

  • Music staff paper or digital notation tools (e.g., MuseScore, Noteflight, Flat.io)
